How it is calculated

For each exchange the page works out the current local time (using your browser’s time zone database, including daylight saving time) and compares it with the regular trading hours. Holidays, shortened trading days and pre- and after-market sessions are not included.

Frequently asked questions

Are holidays included?

No. The clock only knows the regular trading hours. Exchanges are closed on their holidays, and on some days (e.g. before Christmas) trading ends early.

Why do some exchanges close at lunchtime?

The exchanges in Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore have a lunch break between two trading sessions.

Is the forex market really open all the time?

Trading runs around the clock from Sunday 17:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time, because the financial centres take turns. It largely pauses at the weekend.
