How it is calculated

The ECB publishes, for each currency, what 1 euro costs. From currency A to B the converter goes through the euro: amount ÷ rate(A) × rate(B). Example: 100 USD in GBP = 100 ÷ rate(USD) × rate(GBP).

Frequently asked questions

What is the ECB reference rate?

A rate the European Central Bank publishes on every working day at around 16:00 Frankfurt time. It is for information only and not a rate anyone trades at.

Why does my bank use a different rate?

Banks and exchange offices use their own rates and add a margin or fees. The reference rate shows the market level without those mark-ups.

How current are the rates?

They are from the ECB’s latest publication day; the date is shown above the table. There are no new rates on weekends and public holidays.
