Frequently asked questions
What is the inflation rate in Germany?
In September 2026 consumer prices were 3.3% higher than a year earlier (HICP, Eurostat).
What is the HICP?
The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices is calculated by the same rules in every EU country so that the figures can be compared. The ECB sets its policy by the euro area HICP.
Why does the figure differ from Germany’s national CPI?
Germany’s national consumer price index (VPI) weights some spending differently. For comparisons across Europe the HICP is used.
